Discover Cashback Bonus, explained
Discover's Cashback Bonus is simple by design. Cash back, rotating categories, and a year-one match. Here is how the program actually works.
Discover Cashback Bonus is the simplest major rewards program. There are no transfer partners, no points valuations, and no tiered redemption math. One dollar of cash back equals one dollar of statement credit, deposit, or gift card value. The simplicity is the point.
How you earn
Discover it Cash Back. 5% back on rotating quarterly categories (gas, groceries, restaurants, online shopping, and a handful of others depending on the year), capped at $1,500 in quarterly spend, with quarterly activation. 1% on everything else.
Discover it Miles. 1.5% back on every purchase, branded as “miles” but functionally identical to cash back. Redeemable as statement credit against travel purchases or as straight cash.
Discover it Student Cash Back. Same earn structure as the consumer Cash Back card, designed for undergraduates. Free monthly FICO score.
Discover it Secured. Requires a refundable deposit. Earns 2% at gas and restaurants up to $1,000 in quarterly combined purchases, then 1%. Automatic graduation review after about seven months.
How Cashback Match changes the math year one
Cashback Match is the defining feature of the Discover program. At the end of your first 12 months, Discover doubles every dollar of cash back you earned. There is no enrollment, no cap, no spend requirement. If you earned $400 in cash back in year one, Discover credits you another $400. The 5% rotating categories effectively become 10% in year one. The 2% gas/restaurants on the Secured card effectively becomes 4% in year one.
This is the single most generous welcome bonus structure in the US credit card market. A student or first-time cardholder can hit $400 to $600 in year-one cash back easily, which Discover matches to $800 to $1,200. No other major issuer offers a comparable open-ended bonus.
How you redeem
Statement credit. 1:1 against your balance. The most common redemption.
Direct deposit. 1:1 to a linked bank account.
Pay at Amazon. Apply Cashback at checkout on Amazon at 1:1.
Pay at PayPal. Same, at PayPal merchants.
Gift cards. Periodic gift-card promotions can run at 5:1 boosts ($25 of cash back for a $30 gift card, etc.), depending on retailer. These are the only above-1-cpp redemptions in the entire Discover program.
What the program is good for
First-time cardholders. The Secured and Student cards plus Cashback Match make Discover the best year-one program for someone building credit.
Set-and-forget cash back households. If you do not want to manage transfer partners and earn structures, the it Cash Back at 5% rotating plus the match is competitive on a year-one basis.
People who hate complexity. Discover Cashback is one number, paid in dollars, redeemable in five ways. That is the whole program.
What the program is not good for
Anyone wanting to redeem points for outsized travel value. There are no transfer partners. Travel is bought at the cash equivalent.
International travelers who only carry one card. Discover acceptance is uneven outside the US. The card works in many places, but not enough places to be a sole travel card.
Bottom-line recommendation
The Discover it Secured is the best secured card we cover. The Discover it Student Cash Back is among the best student cards. After year one, the cards drop into the second tier behind Active Cash, Citi Double Cash, and Quicksilver for flat-earn alternatives. The right play is to use a Discover card to build credit in years one and two, then keep it open as a low-effort backup card while moving to a higher-rate flat or category card for primary spending.
