The premium-experience issuer. American Express has won J.D. Power customer satisfaction six years running, runs the largest transfer-partner roster, and its app and service set the standard. The tradeoff is bonus politics: lifetime rules, family rules, and pop-up jail make Amex the issuer where application order matters most.

Some of these rules appear in Amex's written offer terms. Others are unpublished bank behavior documented by years of community data. We label which is which.
Each Amex card historically pays its welcome bonus once per lifetime. In practice the language softened through 2025 and eligibility is now decided individually at application. Some longtime former cardholders are getting offers again, but plan around the lifetime rule and treat exceptions as luck.
Holding or having held a more premium card in a family can block bonuses on the cheaper ones. A past Platinum can disqualify you from Gold and Green offers, but moving up the family is fine. Apply for the cheaper card first if you want both bonuses.
Amex sometimes shows a pop-up at application saying you are ineligible for the welcome offer, with no stated reason. It correlates with earning many bonuses, closing cards quickly, or spending only to the bonus threshold. Regular organic spending on your existing Amex cards is the most reported way out.
At most one Amex card approval per five days and two credit cards per 90 days. Charge cards (Platinum, Gold, Green) are generally exempt from the 90-day limit.
Amex caps you at five credit cards (personal and business combined). Charge cards do not count toward that five, with a separate cap of around ten. Authorized-user cards count toward neither.
About 20 partners, mostly 1:1, including ANA, Air Canada, British Airways, Delta, Hilton and Marriott. Etihad leaves the roster June 30, 2026.
Every Membership Rewards card you hold feeds one shared balance automatically. You cannot send points to another person, though you can transfer to an authorized user's airline account.
Points never expire while you hold at least one Membership Rewards card. Closing your last one forfeits the balance.
We currently value Amex Membership Rewards at 2¢ per point (floor 0.6¢, ceiling 2.2¢). Check the points valuation calculator for what your balance is worth.
