Bank of America credit cards

A rewards program that only makes sense with money at the bank, and becomes genuinely unbeatable with a lot of it. The new BofA Rewards tiers boost card earning 10% to 75%, which turns the Unlimited Cash card into up to a 2.6% flat earner. Without a relationship, the same cards are ordinary.

The honest read

Where BofA wins, and where it loses

Strengths

  • Relationship boosts up to 75% make BofA flat-rate cards the highest-earning in the market
  • Ranked second in J.D. Power 2025 issuer satisfaction, behind only Amex
  • Premium Rewards cards carry real travel protections at a $95 price point
  • Large branch network for people who want a banking relationship behind the card

Weaknesses

  • No transfer partners: points are fixed-value, about 1 cent each
  • The May 2026 BofA Rewards rework cut the $100K tier boost from 75% to 50%
  • Velocity rules are unpublished and enforced unevenly
  • Card lineup is small next to Chase or Amex, with no proprietary lounge network

BofA application and bonus rules

Some of these rules appear in BofA's written offer terms. Others are unpublished bank behavior documented by years of community data. We label which is which.

The 2/3/4 rule

Community-documented

At most two new Bank of America cards per rolling 30 days, three per 12 months, and four per 24 months. Only BofA cards count toward it.

Cross-issuer screening

Community-documented

Applicants with roughly seven or more new cards from any issuer in 12 months report near-automatic denials, and some without a BofA deposit relationship report denials at three. Holding a checking or savings account with the bank measurably helps.

24-month bonus rule

In official terms

No bonus on a card if you currently hold it or earned its bonus within the past 24 months. The shortest re-eligibility window among major issuers.

BofA Rewards tiers (new May 2026)

In official terms

The relationship program rebranded from Preferred Rewards with new tiers: a 10% boost for any member, 25% at $30K in combined BofA and Merrill balances, 50% at $100K, and 75% at $1M. Under the old program, $100K earned the full 75%. The boost applies when rewards post, automatically.

The points

How BofA rewards actually work

Transfer partners

None. Redemptions are fixed-value, which makes the math simple and caps the upside.

Pooling points

No points pooling between cards. The relationship boost is the program: it multiplies what each card earns at posting time.

Expiration

Points and cash rewards do not expire while the account is open.

We currently value Bank of America points at 1¢ per point (floor 1¢, ceiling 1¢). Check the points valuation calculator for what your balance is worth.

FAQ

Bank of America card questions, answered

What is the Bank of America 2/3/4 rule?
An unpublished limit of two new BofA cards per 30 days, three per 12 months and four per 24 months. It only counts Bank of America's own cards, unlike Chase's 5/24 which counts everyone's.
How do BofA Rewards boosts work after the May 2026 changes?
Combined balances across Bank of America deposits and Merrill investments set your tier: 10% boost for any member, 25% at $30K, 50% at $100K and 75% at $1M. The boost multiplies card rewards automatically when they post. The old 75%-at-$100K Platinum Honors deal is gone.
Is the Premium Rewards card worth it without Preferred Rewards status?
Barely. At 2x travel and dining and 1.5x elsewhere with fixed-value points, it is ordinary until a relationship boost lifts it. At the 50% tier it earns an effective 3x on travel and 2.25x on everything, which beats most $95 cards outright.
Do Bank of America points transfer to airlines?
No. BofA points are fixed-value, redeemable for cash or travel credits at about 1 cent each. If transfer partners matter to you, the boost math has to beat what Chase or Amex points would earn you, which takes Platinum-tier balances.
What credit score do you need for Bank of America cards?
Around 670 for entry cards, with Premium Rewards and Premium Rewards Elite approvals clustering at 700 to 740+. An existing deposit relationship visibly improves both approval odds and starting credit lines.
