Capital One credit cards

The simplest path into transferable points, and the only major issuer with no foreign transaction fees on any card. Venture cards earn a flat 2x on everything with 1:1 transfers to about 20 partners. The costs of entry: applications hard-pull all three credit bureaus, and approvals are the most algorithmic and opaque in the industry.

The honest read

Where Capital One wins, and where it loses

Strengths

  • No foreign transaction fees on any card in the lineup
  • Flat 2x earning with real transfer partners and no category tracking
  • Miles move free to any other Capital One cardholder, not just household members
  • Full credit spectrum: secured and starter cards through Venture X

Weaknesses

  • Applications typically hard-pull all three credit bureaus at once
  • One new card per six months, counting personal and business together
  • Denials are automated and opaque, including denials of strong applicants who hold several Capital One cards
  • Venture X lounge access was cut back hard in 2025 and 2026
Before you apply

Capital One application and bonus rules

Some of these rules appear in Capital One's written offer terms. Others are unpublished bank behavior documented by years of community data. We label which is which.

One card per six months

Community-documented

Capital One approves at most one new card every six months, and personal and business cards share the same counter. Applications inside the window get an automatic decline, usually without a hard pull.

All three bureaus get pulled

Community-documented

A single Capital One application typically generates hard inquiries at Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. No other major issuer does this routinely. Factor in three inquiries, not one, when planning applications.

48-month bonus rule

In official terms

You cannot earn a welcome bonus on a product if you earned that product's bonus within the past 48 months, measured from when the bonus posted. Within the Venture family, a Venture X bonus only blocks Venture X, but a Venture or Venture X bonus blocks the Venture.

Wallet-based denials

Community-documented

Community data shows denials clustering around five open Capital One personal cards, with the denial reason citing too many active cards. Existing cardholders applying for Venture X hit this regularly. Capital One publishes no cap.

Discover is becoming Capital One

In official terms

Capital One bought Discover in May 2025. Discover accounts migrate onto Capital One's app starting July 27, 2026. Whether Discover cards start counting toward Capital One's application limits has not been announced.

The points

How Capital One Miles actually work

Transfer partners

About 20 transfer partners, mostly 1:1, with Turkish, Avianca and Aeroplan as the headline sweet spots. Wyndham and Choice cover hotels.

Pooling points

Combine rewards across your own cards free, and transfer miles to any other Capital One cardholder with no fee or limit. Cash-back cards can convert to miles when you also hold a miles card.

Expiration

Miles never expire while the account is open.

We currently value Capital One Miles at 1.85¢ per point (floor 1¢, ceiling 2.5¢). Check the points valuation calculator for what your balance is worth.

FAQ

Capital One card questions, answered

What credit score do you need for a Capital One card?
The lineup spans the full spectrum. Secured and Platinum cards approve thin and rebuilding files, QuicksilverOne sits in the fair range, Venture and Savor want roughly 700+, and Venture X approvals cluster at 740+. The pre-approval tool checks with a soft pull only.
Does Capital One really pull all three credit bureaus?
Usually, yes. Crowd-sourced data shows Equifax pulled in nearly every state with TransUnion and Experian close behind, often all on one application. It is the biggest hidden cost of applying.
How often can you apply for Capital One cards?
One approval per six months, counting personal and business cards together. The clock is enforced automatically, so time your applications rather than testing it.
Can I transfer Capital One miles to someone else?
Yes, and this is unusual: miles move free to any other Capital One miles cardholder, not just people in your household. It is the most flexible points-sharing policy among the major issuers.
What happens to Discover cards now that Capital One owns Discover?
Accounts start migrating to Capital One's website and app on July 27, 2026, in waves into 2027. Capital One says Cashback Match, no annual fees, and the 5% rotating categories stay, with Capital One travel and entertainment bonus categories added. Whether Discover cards will count against Capital One application rules is not yet defined.
