How we value points and miles
Every program gets three numbers: a floor, an editorial baseline, and a ceiling. The floor is the worst common redemption, usually cash back or gift cards. The baseline is what a reasonably attentive cardholder gets without studying award charts. The ceiling is a realistic best case, typically a transfer to an airline partner booked in a premium cabin or a high-value hotel redemption.
The baselines come from cross-checking published valuations against real award pricing each month. Transferable currencies like Chase Ultimate Rewards and Amex Membership Rewards hold values near 2 cents because their partners keep multiple paths to outsized redemptions open. Airline miles run 1.2 to 1.6 cents under dynamic pricing. Hotel points spread the widest, from 1.55 cents at Hyatt down to 0.35 cents at Hilton.
Why your balance is worth a range, never one number
A 100,000-point Membership Rewards balance is worth about $600 as statement credits and over $2,000 transferred to ANA for business class. Same points. The spread is the whole game in points and miles, and it is why this calculator shows a floor-to-ceiling spectrum instead of pretending one number is the truth.
Two practical rules fall out of the math. Never redeem transferable points below 1 cent when a cash floor at 1 cent exists. And treat hotel point earn rates skeptically, since a 14x rate on cheap points often trails a 3x rate on expensive ones.
