PenFed Credit Union credit cards

The Pathfinder is priced like a bank travel card, and its credits pay the fee back if you fly a few times a year. The Pathfinder bundles a $100 airline credit, a $120 Global Entry credit and a Priority Pass membership into a $95 card that costs nothing if you are military or keep a PenFed checking account. The honest read

Where PenFed wins, and where it loses

Strengths

  • Anyone can join PenFed. There is no military requirement and membership is created during the application
  • Honors Advantage waives the Pathfinder annual fee and lifts travel earning to 4X and dining to 3X
  • Pathfinder pairs a $100 annual airline incidental credit with a $120 Global Entry or $85 TSA PreCheck credit
  • No foreign transaction fee across the rewards lineup, and a single quoted APR rather than a wide range

Weaknesses

  • Points are worth $0.0085 to $0.01 with no airline or hotel transfer partners, and expire five years after they are awarded
  • The Priority Pass benefit only covers the $99 membership fee. Each lounge visit still costs $35 per person
  • The best earn rates require a PenFed checking relationship or military service
  • Small lineup of four consumer cards and no business travel card
Before you apply

PenFed application and bonus rules

Some of these rules appear in PenFed's written offer terms. Others are unpublished bank behavior documented by years of community data. We label which is which.

Membership is required, and open to everyone

In official terms

Anyone of age can join. PenFed's own FAQ says no military affiliation is required, and if you apply as a guest, PenFed creates the membership during the application. You do have to be a member to hold the card.

Honors Advantage changes the earn rates as well as the fee

In official terms

Honors Advantage requires either military service, or being primary owner on both the credit card and a PenFed checking account, which can be an existing qualifying product or a new Access America Checking or Free Checking account. A Free Checking account must also carry a $500 daily minimum balance or $500 in monthly direct deposits. Qualifying waives the $95 Pathfinder annual fee and adds 1 point per dollar to both the travel and dining rates.

One welcome bonus per account, at opening only

In official terms

PenFed's offer terms state that each account is eligible for one bonus at account opening, awarded about four weeks after the spend requirement is met. There is no published re-eligibility window because there is no repeat bonus.

Points expire after five years

In official terms

Pathfinder Rewards points expire five years after being awarded, on a first-earned, first-spent basis. Closing the account, or PenFed closing it for non-use, wipes the balance immediately, except for New York residents who get 90 days from notification.

One quoted APR, not a range

In official terms

PenFed discloses a single Pathfinder APR of 17.99% rather than a creditworthiness-based band. It is a variable rate tied to Prime, and the same 17.99% applies to purchases, cash advances and the penalty APR.

The points

How PenFed rewards actually work

Transfer partners

None. Points are fixed-value and redeemable for travel booked through PenFed's rewards portal, merchandise, gift cards and reward cards. PenFed states points are always worth at least $0.0085 each, with some redemptions worth up to $0.01.

Pooling points

None. Each PenFed card runs its own separate rewards program with its own rules. Pathfinder Rewards points do not combine with Platinum Rewards points or with another member's balance. A minimum balance of 1,000 points may be required to redeem.

Expiration

Points expire five years after being awarded, on a first-earned, first-spent basis. If the account closes for any reason the points expire immediately, except in New York, where members get 90 days from notification.

We currently value PenFed points at 0.85¢ per point (floor 0.6¢, ceiling 1¢). Check the points valuation calculator for what your balance is worth.

FAQ

PenFed Credit Union card questions, answered

Do I have to be in the military to get a PenFed credit card?
No. PenFed's own FAQ says anyone of age can join and no military affiliation is required. You must be a member to hold the card, but if you apply as a guest PenFed creates your membership during the application.
What is PenFed Honors Advantage and is it worth it?
It is PenFed's relationship tier, earned by military service or by being primary owner on both the card and a qualifying PenFed checking account. Qualifying waives the Pathfinder's $95 annual fee and raises travel earning from 3X to 4X and dining from 2X to 3X. On a $95 card with a $100 airline credit, qualifying turns a break-even product into a clearly profitable one.
Are PenFed points worth anything for travel?
Only at face value. PenFed states its points are worth a minimum of $0.0085 each, with some redemptions reaching $0.01. There are no airline or hotel transfer partners, so redemptions run through PenFed's own travel portal, merchandise and gift cards.
Does the PenFed Pathfinder still come as an American Express card?
No. PenFed moved the Pathfinder to Visa Signature and no longer issues any American Express card. Every current PenFed disclosure, and the card face itself, reads Visa Signature.
Does the Pathfinder Priority Pass membership include free lounge visits?
No. PenFed covers the $99 Priority Pass Select membership fee, but the terms state your card is charged $35 per person per visit for both you and any guest. Two people visiting one lounge costs you $70.
What happens to my PenFed points if I close the card?
They are forfeited immediately. Points normally expire five years after being awarded, but closing the account, or PenFed closing it for non-use, wipes the balance at once. New York residents are the only exception, with 90 days from notification to redeem.
