Welcome Bonus Breakeven Calculator
Tool Plug in your monthly spend and we calculate exactly when you will hit any cards minimum spend requirement to earn the welcome bonus.
How the breakeven math works
A welcome bonus has two requirements: spend a set amount, and do it inside a set window, usually 3 or 6 months from approval. The calculator divides the requirement by your normal monthly card spending to find when you would cross the line, then compares that against the deadline. On pace means the bonus fits your life. Short means you would need to manufacture extra spending, and that is where bonus math goes wrong.
The tool also shows value per $100 of required spend, which is the honest way to compare bonuses. A 60,000-point bonus on $4,000 of spend pays roughly $30 of value per $100 spent. A 175,000-point bonus on $12,000 pays about $29 per $100 despite the bigger headline. Big numbers and good deals are different things.
What counts toward minimum spend
Purchases that post to your statement count. Annual fees do not, and neither do balance transfers, cash advances, or anything later refunded. Returns are the silent killer: a $300 return in month two can quietly drop you below the requirement after you thought you had cleared it.
The window almost always starts at approval, not activation or first purchase. Card shipping time eats a week of it. If a bonus requires spending you would never do naturally, paying 25% APR on carried balances or buying things you do not need, the bonus is paying you with your own money.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What purchases count toward a credit card minimum spend requirement?▾
Statement-posted purchases count: groceries, gas, dining, bills, travel, and most everyday charges. Annual fees, balance transfers, cash advances, returned items, and disputed charges do not count. A few issuers also exclude gift card purchases from select merchants under manufactured-spending rules.
When does the welcome bonus clock start?▾
At account approval for nearly every major issuer, not when the card arrives or when you first use it. A 3-month window approved on June 1 typically ends in late August or early September. The issuer's terms state the exact rule, and our calculator assumes the approval-date convention.
Is it worth spending extra to hit a welcome bonus?▾
Small, bounded acceleration can make sense: prepaying a utility, timing an insurance premium, or buying a gift card at a store you genuinely shop. Spending money you would not otherwise spend rarely pencils out. A bonus worth $750 costs you the full face value of every unnecessary dollar spent chasing it.
What happens if I miss the spending deadline?▾
The bonus is forfeited, and issuers almost never grant extensions. Some will tell you your exact spend-to-date if you call. If you are going to miss by a small margin, charging an upcoming planned expense early is the legitimate lever. Missing by a large margin means the card was the wrong size for your spending.
Do welcome bonuses justify annual fees?▾
In year one, usually. A 75,000-point bonus worth roughly $1,400 in transfers swamps a $395 fee. The real question is year two, when the bonus is gone and the fee renews. Run the annual fee calculator with your real spending before you commit, and decide your year-two plan at signup.
