Discover credit cards

The friendliest major issuer for first cards and rebuilding credit, with US-based service that long set the satisfaction benchmark. Cashback Match doubles everything you earn in year one, which routinely beats a conventional welcome bonus. The big story now: Capital One owns Discover, and accounts move to Capital One's platform starting July 2026.

Before you apply

Discover application and bonus rules

Some of these rules appear in Discover's written offer terms. Others are unpublished bank behavior documented by years of community data. We label which is which.

One new card per year, two cards total

Community-documented

Discover approves one new card per rolling 12 months, generally wants your first card open about a year before a second, and caps you at two Discover cards.

Cashback Match repeats

In official terms

There is no once-per-lifetime language. The match applies to a new account's first 12 billing periods, paid as a lump sum at the end, and prior cardmembers opening a new account can earn it again.

Rotating 5% categories

In official terms

The it Cash Back earns 5% on quarterly rotating categories after activation, capped at $1,500 of spend per quarter, then 1%. With the year-one match, that 5% is effectively 10%.

Moving to Capital One

In official terms

Capital One completed its purchase of Discover in May 2025. Accounts migrate to Capital One's website and app in waves starting July 27, 2026. Cashback Match, the 5% calendar, and no-fee structure are staying, per Capital One, with new travel and entertainment bonus categories added.

The points

How Discover Cashback actually work

Transfer partners

None. Discover rewards are fixed-value cash back, worth exactly 1 cent per point.

Pooling points

No pooling program, and with a two-card cap there is little to pool. Rewards redeem 1:1 for cash at any amount.

Expiration

Rewards never expire, and Discover pays out any remaining balance when an account closes.

We currently value Discover Cashback Bonus at 1¢ per point (floor 1¢, ceiling 1¢). Check the points valuation calculator for what your balance is worth.

FAQ

Discover card questions, answered

Is Discover a good first credit card?
One of the best. The student and secured cards approve files most majors reject, there is no annual fee anywhere in the lineup, the free FICO score helps you track progress, and Cashback Match makes year one unusually rewarding.
How does Discover Cashback Match actually work?
Discover doubles every dollar of cash back you earn in your first 12 billing periods, paid once at the end of year one. There is no minimum spend, no cap, and no enrollment. A heavy spender can out-earn most flat welcome bonuses with it.
Is Discover accepted everywhere?
In the US, acceptance is near-universal. Abroad it falls off sharply outside networks partnered with Diners Club, JCB and UnionPay. If you travel internationally, carry a Visa or Mastercard backup.
What does the Capital One acquisition mean for my Discover card?
Your account moves to Capital One's website and app sometime between July 27, 2026 and early 2027, in waves. Capital One has said the no-fee structure, Cashback Match and 5% rotating categories continue, with Capital One offers and travel bonus categories added.
How many Discover cards can you have?
Two, with roughly a year between them. The cap is real and confirmed by Discover customer service, so pick your two deliberately.
