Capital One Miles, explained
Capital One Miles transfer to 15-plus partners, including Turkish, Avianca and Aeroplan. What the program does well and where it trails Chase and Amex.
Capital One Miles is the third major flexible-points program in the United States, after Chase Ultimate Rewards and Amex Membership Rewards. The program has grown fast since 2021 because Capital One added genuine transfer partners. Before that, the miles were essentially a 1-cpp travel eraser, which is a polite way of saying cash back wearing a costume.
How you earn
The Venture X earns 10x on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 5x on flights through Capital One Travel, and 2x on everything else. The Venture earns 2x on every purchase and 5x on hotels and rentals via Capital One Travel. The Venture Rewards (entry-level) earns 2x flat. Business variants exist with similar structures.
The 2x flat rate is the program’s signature feature. No other major flexible-points program earns 2x on every purchase. Chase Sapphire is 1x on uncategorized spend. Amex Platinum is 1x on uncategorized spend. Capital One’s flat 2x means you do not need to think about category coding.
How you redeem
Travel eraser. Buy a travel purchase on your Venture card, then “erase” it by applying miles at 1 cent each. This is the floor. The Venture X turns this into a useful $300 anniversary credit automatically applied to Capital One Travel bookings.
Capital One Travel. The booking portal pays 1 cent per mile on most redemptions. Capital One Travel uses Hopper’s underlying technology and offers price freezes and price drop protection, which is unique among the major travel portals.
Transfer to partners. The main reason to hold a Venture-branded card. Capital One transfers to fifteen-plus partners including Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles, British Airways Avios, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, Finnair, Singapore KrisFlyer, Turkish Miles & Smiles, Virgin Red, and on the hotel side Wyndham, Choice, and Accor.
Most transfers are at 1:1. A few partners run 5:4 or 2:1 ratios. The current ratios are listed on Capital One’s transfer page.
What the program is good for
Star Alliance premium cabins via Aeroplan or Turkish. Turkish Miles & Smiles at 12,500 miles for a partner award is one of the best deals in points and miles.
Wyndham hotel transfers. Wyndham is a unique partner because it includes Vacasa vacation rentals, where dynamic pricing can produce strong values.
Approachable acquisition. Capital One welcome offers are large and the products are not subject to the 5/24 rule. You can collect Capital One cards alongside Chase or Amex without burning Chase slots.
What the program is not good for
Hyatt. No transfer. Same hole as Amex. Hyatt loyalists need Chase Ultimate Rewards.
Domestic United awards. United is not a partner. You have to route via Air Canada Aeroplan for Star Alliance redemptions on United metal.
Hotel transfers other than Wyndham. The other hotel partners are not strong redemptions. Capital One Travel at 1 cent per mile usually beats them.
Bottom-line recommendation
Capital One Miles is the right anchor for someone who values the 2x flat earn and wants Turkish or Avianca premium cabin access. The Venture X is one of the strongest premium travel cards in the market because the math works out before perks. For domestic travelers, the program is competitive but not clearly better than Chase. For Hyatt loyalists, look elsewhere.
